Banana Nutrition Facts for This Tasty Tropical Fruit

Banana nutrition was the furthest thing from my mind as I just enjoyed one of the delicious fruits. What is it that makes it such a satisfying small meal or snack?

To Gas or Not to Gas

When bananas are exported from the banana-producing countries, such as Brazil, Ecuador, Philippines, Costa Rica, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama, they are picked green. When they arrive in the importing country, they are held in a special ripening room where the fruit is gassed with ethylene gas.

They can be ordered ungassed, however. These bananas may show up as fully green in your market and will ripen slowly and develop a richer flavor. Also, their skins will reach a yellow/brown speckled state and have a longer shelf life.

Save the Songbirds

It’s important to buy organic bananas. These fruits are typically grown with one of the highest amounts of pesticides of any tropical crop.

Songbird The amounts of pesticide used to grow tropical fruits would not be allowed in the United States. Since the fruit is peeled before eating, there isn’t so much of a danger to consumers as to the environment where they are grown.

Birds are being poisoned by the high amounts of highly toxic pesticides. Be kind to the environment and the workers on the land, and buy organic bananas.
