Eat Black-eyed Peas for Good Luck in the New Year
Black-eyed peas are a New Year’s tradition in the Southern United States (and elsewhere), thought to bring good luck and prosperity for the coming year. Greens are frequently eaten with the peas and are believed to symbolize folding money. Adding to the feast, grains are included for abundance. Cornbread is a frequent accompaniment, with corn symbolizing gold, and rice is also popular.Other CulturesMany cultures observe a similar tradition. Back in Pharaoh’s day, these legumes symbolized good fortune and luck. In Italy lentils are served with pork sausage (which this site doesn't recommend, obviously) to bring abundance. In Brazil lentils are served with rice, which expands when cooked, signifying increase and abundance.
The green vegetable used in Germany, Poland and Scandinavia is cabbage, which represents the leaves of money. The belief that these beans are a symbol of New Year good luck goes back to the Babylonian Talmud from the earliest centuries AD. Good NutritionThe great American scientist, botanist, educator, and inventor, George Washington Carver, encouraged the use of this legume, not only for its favorable effects on soil but also for the outstanding nutrition. It is a good source of calcium, folate, iron, magnesium, potassium, and fiber.
