Can You Eat Too Much Spinach?

by ali
(usa)

So I'm thinking about eating just (2-4 cups) of spinach for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 10-20 days...kinda like a detox.

Would you say that's healthy?

I mean, since spinach has so many health benefits, I figured that it would be extra healthy and fast if I just ate it in every meal (and just that).

And do you think it's healthier than green smoothies? 'Cause I've been drinking those for a year, but I feel like it's too easy that it doesn't really do anything.

Anyway, thanks in advance. And GREAT website!

Re: Spinach

Thank you, Chris, for taking the time to submit the following answer:

This is mainly in response to the below quoted sentence:

"I mean, since spinach has so many health benefits, I figured that it would be extra healthy and fast if I just ate it in every meal (and just that)."

A few key factors:

1) Moderation
2) Food sources are not "extra" healthy; they are what they are made up of and what it provides for the body to function.
3) Variety

Utilizing these three points, I will address your question/statement.

One main aspect of the human diet is variety: we need to consume a range of plants, fruits, fungi and animal products in order to provide the living system within our body the nutrients to continue working. Like many systems, our body is comprised of many involved parts which require tuning in specialized or diverse means.

In operating so, the complexity of our health is sustained by a balance of different chemicals/foods/nutrients for different aspects/parts. There are some foods which are beneficial to consume more so than others; yet, even the food we should consume the least are still a source of chemistry.

This means that if you were to only consume one specialized food source (in your case: spinach) you would run risk of overpopulating your body with the nutrients from said food source and under populate it with the range of different foods/chemicals the human body needs to function properly, to maintain that living balance.

Generally speaking, a proper "detox" diet is fundamentally the same as a healthy, well-rounded diet. There are no short-cuts to health which are not double-edged, which would end up not improving your well being.

If you are feeling a little "clogged-up" or "sluggish", maybe your diet needs a higher fibre content- both insoluble and soluble- and more protein. A lack of protein can leave one sluggish. Soy protein (soy beans, tofu, soy milk, etc.) has been shown evident to have a lasting effect on metabolic increase, which would give one more energy.

But above all, take large amounts of dihydrogen monoxide- water! Most of the body is comprised of water and water is the most potent chemical compound both available and present in our body, which, like a toilet flusher: keeps the bowl clean. ;)
