Set a Good ExampleConsider a new health plan for the entire family. Be an example for your child by turning off the TV, getting off the couch, and going for a walk together. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of walking and hiking in the woods with my dad.
Emphasize the positive aspects of adopting a healthy lifestyle, not just the weight-loss aspect. Talk about the fun of playing outdoors, and how a healthy diet and exercise will lead to a strong and healthy heart and lungs. Find reasons to praise your child’s accomplishments, but don’t reward them with food. Instead, go play miniature golf or go bowling together.Childhood obesity doesn’t have to be a lifetime sentence to an overweight adulthood filled with hypertension, heart attacks, strokes and cancer. It can be turned around so a child will look forward to a healthy, vibrant future. Return to
