The Reasons for Childhood Obesity are Many

Childhood obesity is considered to be an epidemic in developed countries, particularly the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Causes

The causes of children being overweight are many and include:

  • Eating habits
  • Family influence
  • Physical inactivity
  • Behavioral factors
  • Psychological factors
  • Lack of sleep

Researchers have discovered a connection between soft drink consumption and children being overweight. In one study, children were found to be 1.6 times more likely to be obese for every soft drink they consumed each day.

Some of these causes are obvious, such as eating junk food and fast food regularly. Studies have shown that eating out on a regular basis is another reason kids get fat.

The thing is, little kids don’t make the connections that are obvious to adults. Parents need to set a good example and teach their children about healthy eating habits.

Sure, people are really busy these days and it’s easy to stop on the way home from work and pick up a bag of greasy burgers or a pizza, but there are healthier choices for take-out food and eating out .

Set a Good Example

Consider a new health plan for the entire family. Be an example for your child by turning off the TV, getting off the couch, and going for a walk together. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of walking and hiking in the woods with my dad.

Woman and Girl Rollerblading Emphasize the positive aspects of adopting a healthy lifestyle, not just the weight-loss aspect. Talk about the fun of playing outdoors, and how a healthy diet and exercise will lead to a strong and healthy heart and lungs. Find reasons to praise your child’s accomplishments, but don’t reward them with food. Instead, go play miniature golf or go bowling together.

Childhood obesity doesn’t have to be a lifetime sentence to an overweight adulthood filled with hypertension, heart attacks, strokes and cancer. It can be turned around so a child will look forward to a healthy, vibrant future.
