Detox Diets – Where Do You Start?

It’s been a long and hard winter for many of us, but spring is right around the corner and your thoughts might be turning to spring cleaning. Our homes aren’t the only things in our lives that need a cleanse; our bodies may be screaming for a healthy cleanse, or detoxification.

People often turn to detox diets when contemplating an inner cleanse. There are many types… a 3 day cleanse, a 21 day plan, or a 1 week program.

What often happens is that the cleanse is so effective and the results so impressive, that the brief detox program turns into a new lifestyle, leading to longstanding vibrant good health.

It can be confusing to the beginner. What to do? Where to start?

If you’ve read much of the other information on my website, you know that my diet orientation is plant based. Therefore, I’ve compiled some of my favorite sources and teachers of healthy diets. Any of these are an excellent starting point for your spring (or anytime) cleanse.

Raw or Cooked?

The Rave Diet

I love raw foods… love the experiences I’ve had when I have faithfully followed a raw food program. It’s amazingly simple to lose weight, and health problems disappear quickly.

However, this time of the year, when it’s often cold and gloomy, I yearn for warm and (dare I say) cooked foods. I’ve done a lot of reading of some well-known researchers and teachers of plant-based diets. What I’ve noticed is that people still get healthy on these no-animal-food, yet cooked, programs. Detoxing is occurring and necessary nutrients are being supplied, allowing bodies to heal naturally.

The Raw Family

The Boutenko family embarked on a program that completely changed their health and lives.

They were healed of: Victoria’s arrhythmia, edema, obesity and depression; Igor’s rheumatoid arthritis and hyperthyroidism; Sergei’s juvenile diabetes; and Valya’s asthma.

If you’ve struggled with finding detox diets, they are wonderful teachers and even have a book and DVD called 12 Steps to Raw Food . This makes the program easy, clear and supportive of your healthy cleanse.

The Boutenkos are well-respected, knowledgeable teachers in the raw foods movement. I love their materials and was privileged to attend one of their presentations that included a fabulous raw food Thanksgiving feast. What a treat!

Dr. John McDougall

Dr. McDougall is another of my favorite healthy eating teachers. His program is based on a nourishing, low-fat, starch-based diet that not only promotes a broad range of dramatic and lasting health benefits such as weight (fat) loss and can also reverse serious illness, such as heart disease, without drugs.

For those who aren’t interested in raw food detox diets, this program is excellent for healing and cleansing. Their website contains much useful information, including a free program to get you started: http://www.drmcdougall.com/free.html. Dr. McDougall writes about this:

Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

This is another vegetarian diet eating program, although Dr. Fuhrman includes some recipes in his books for people who aren’t ready to commit to a completely vegetarian diet yet. His books and other materials are interesting and contain delicious recipes.

James Carey and the Ann Wigmore Detox Diet
