Online Fitness and Diet Plans to Lose Weight and Get Healthy

Diet plans are a hot topic, especially during—or after—the holidays when delicious and fattening food is so hard to avoid.

I’ve wanted to do some personal research on this topic for some time, and NOW is the time. I didn’t really overdo it this holiday season, but I still would like to lose 10-15 pounds and become stronger and more energetic.

The way to reach my goal is simple: Eat healthy and take in fewer calories, and exercise. Nothing fancy, just the basics.

However, I know there are additional tools to assist me in reaching my weight loss and fitness goals, and many of them are online and some are actually free. It’s my intention over the next few weeks and months to explore these resources and write about them.

It makes sense to me to start out with the online diet plans that don’t cost anything, especially in light of the current economic hardships that many folks are enduring.

Eventually, I will research some sites of diet plans that charge money, either one payment up front, such as Anne Collins.com and Fitday.com (which has a free option) or a monthly charge, but first I’m starting with those that don’t cost anything.

Read my review of Weight-By-Date.

The first site—and I just joined it—is www.PEERtrainer.com.

PEERtrainer Online Weight Loss and Fitness Support

Women Exercising This site is big on support groups. I tend to agree, having had success in the past with my own little support group.

With this program you can join a small group of up to four people or a larger team, based on your interests. I chose to join a large group of people interested in following the programs of Dr. McDougall and Dr. Fuhrman (clicking on these links will take you to their respective websites).

There are loads of articles about fitness and diet, motivation to eat healthy and exercise, as well as calorie counters that include many vegetarian foods, including prepared meals. This is a nice feature because most diet sites tend to ignore or give short shrift to vegetarians, although that’s improving as people become more educated and enlightened.

It is suggested that you log on daily or at least four times a week, for accountability reasons. They really stress this factor. When you log on, you’ll enter food eaten into a daily log, along with workout times. You need to look up calories and enter them manually in your log.

This brings up a shortcoming, at least for me. It may not be important for everyone, but I like the ability to keep track of and chart the amounts of nutrients and calories using databases of nutrients and have the ability to create graphs and charts with the data to get a nice graphic representation of my progress.

There’s a lot of information on this site, but I haven’t located anything like this yet. I have a feeling that I may have to join a pay-to-belong site for this benefit. Perhaps combining the support aspect of PEERtrainer with the qualitative aspect of another site might be a good plan. I’ll let you know.
