Foods High in Fiber Should Be Included in Your Daily Diet

Foods high in fiber provide an important foundation for a healthy diet.

What is Dietary Fiber?

In normal digestion of plant foods, sugars, starches and vitamins are broken down into nutrients and absorbed by the intestines. The cell walls of the plants are not digested, becoming the bulk or roughage of the stool.

No wonder there are so many constipation products on the market. The typical American diet provides very little fiber, with so many people eating mostly meat, dairy products, and white flour concoctions.

How Much Do You Need?

The typical American diet contains approximately 5-8 grams of fiber per day, while an optimal daily diet would provide 25-30 grams.

Foods Highest in Fiber

Perhaps you want to make an effort to include more high-fiber foods in your diet but you're not sure exactly which foods to include. Here is a brief list to get you started.

To be considered high in fiber, a food should contain at least 5 grams of fiber per serving; those that are good sources should have at least 2.5 grams per serving.
