Former Christian Scientist

by Laurie Marshall
(Bryan, Texas)

Having been raised in a Christian Scientist household, I am dismayed by the implication of the Newsweek quote. Bizarre eating habits, or any eating habits at all are not condoned by Christian Science. Their attitude is from the Bible, Matthew 6:25. "Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?" They do not take medicine and they do not use food as medicine.

This anorexic's family diet had nothing to do with Christian Science. Perhaps the anorexic claimed it did, and if so, the family misunderstood the teachings of the religion.

Christian Science is much maligned and rarely understood. Such a quote as this only adds to the confusion and misunderstanding.
