Does a Fruitarian Eat Only Fruit?

The name fruitarian suggests this is a person who eats just fruit. But what exactly is fruit?

Most people think of the sweet and fleshy things that are on trees, like apples, bananas, plums, mangos, and pears, or on plants, like blueberries and strawberries.

Red Apple

Botanically speaking, there are some foods that you might not think of as fruits but actually are, such as: tomatoes, avocadoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, grains, and nuts.

Different Types

Among the followers of this diet, there are differences. Some strict ones eat only those fruits that fall from a plant, so that the plant doesn’t have to be killed.

Others avoid grains, believing that it’s not a proper food for humans.

Some consider themselves as followers of the path if their diet consists of a certain percentage of fruit, such as 75%, and the rest of their diet is vegetarian .

Most approach the discipline as a vegan , raw foods lifestyle.

PROS

  • Fruit is sweet and delicious, cleansing, and supplies your body with natural water. It seems to be a true food for humans, something we all enjoy eating.
  • Practitioners believe it incredibly sharpens the senses.
  • It makes it easy to maintain a healthy weight.

CONS

  • For the strictest adherents of this diet, there can be social isolation. So much of social interaction revolves around food, and unless they have a lot of friends who eat the same way, they might find themselves frequently alone at mealtimes.
  • A lot of time, it turns into a sort of phobia about food. Almost like an anorexic who is afraid to eat because she might become fat, the fruitarian will be afraid of something like bread because it’s mucus causing or it’s cooked and therefore poisonous.
  • People might experience frequent hunger and start obsessing about taboo foods.
  • Nutrient deficiencies are something to be aware of, particularly vitamin B12.

Fruit is a wonderful, nutritious food that we all should eat plenty of. When you add nuts, seeds, grains, greens and other vegetables, it’s ideal for good health. Perhaps the reason that it (strict fruitarianism) is such a hard diet to stick to should be an indication that it’s not the proper diet for humans. It’s all about balance and common sense.
