My Passion for Good Nutrition Has Been a Fascinating Journey

Good nutrition - I am passionate about healthy eating and sharing my knowledge with other people. I love food, and I believe good nutrition is the basis for good health.

My interest in nutrition began when I met my (now former) husband. He was a body builder and was careful with his diet, creating strange looking and even stranger tasting high-protein drinks in his blender.

Naturally, I wanted to share in his life and interests, so I began reading the magazines and books that were important to him. This opened up a whole new world to me, and I just ate it up (pun intended).

We shopped at health foods stores when they were mere curiosities to many people. We bought organic food when we could find it. I read everything I could find about natural food and natural healing. I read Diet for a Small Planet and soon we became vegetarians .

To Arkansas

It wasn’t long before we decided to take part in the back-to-the-land movement that was flourishing at that time and we moved to the Arkansas Ozarks.

There we planted our first organic garden and I learned to put food up by canning and drying. I baked all of our bread from scratch, even grinding the grains in a hand-cranked grain mill. That was some delicious and hard-earned bread!

While we were in Mountain View, we made friends with a couple who were practicing a very strange but intriguing diet: raw foods . It was as if the husband had undergone a complete transformation…he looked like a completely new man, vibrantly healthy and much younger. After seeing how healthy they were and studying good nutrition from a raw-food perspective for ourselves, we decided to give the diet a try.

For a year we were raw foodists. I had such fun reading the books and trying the recipes I could find, from people like Ann Wigmore, Viktoris Kulvinskas, and John Tobe. Those are names that many of today’s raw foodists may never have heard. They were pioneers.

Our raw food year was a year of growth, including a new spiritual depth, and incredibly good health. I wanted to share what I was learning and felt that there were truths connected with natural healing and good nutrition that the vast majority of people weren’t hearing. It was like there was a conspiracy to keep people from being healthy.

Chiropractic College

So I decided to become an alternative doctor and made plans to attend chiropractic college in Los Angeles.

From then on, I remained a vegetarian and experimented with different types of vegetarian diets and changed around, back and forth. I studied macrobiotics with Michio Kushi, went vegan , then back to lacto -ovo vegetarian, pescetarian (not technically a vegetarian), and started and stopped being a raw foodist. I tried different fasts—water fasts, juice fasts, rice fasts. There were years when I took lots of nutritional supplements and recommended them to my patients.

Changes

Over the years, there were many changes and unplanned-for events, as there are in life… divorce, remarriage, moving—a lot—another divorce, and then just being adrift.

In the midst of upset and change, one constant has been my enthusiasm about natural health care and good nutrition and my desire to share information with people to help them with their health.

Starting another practice was financially uncomfortable and probably unwise, so I worked at a variety of jobs to pay the bills, mostly secretarial and clerical jobs that sapped my energy and destroyed creative impulses.

Trying to Start a Business

I created a couple of websites devoted to affiliate marketing and even tried to create a dating website. The affiliate site brought in pennies, and the fledgling dating website crashed and I lost interest in it. My heart wasn’t in it for either of those projects.

I also got involved in network marketing companies that offered great health-enhancing products, and I thought I could reach people that way. I’m pretty much an introvert, though, and I think it’s the extroverts who more easily succeed in MLM.

However, in my explorations of how to work the network marketing business, I came across a program that would help me build a website and teach me to market it. This quickly got my attention. I thought, here was a way for me to share health information and maybe even market my MLM company's products eventually.

I Discover My Purpose

As I said, I was feeling adrift in life, like I was wasting my education and passion. This new “thing” (it’s hard to describe it in one word) I was fortunate to discover allows me to connect with more people than I could ever reach in private practice.

It probably sounds corny, but I feel as if I’ve finally uncovered my true purpose in life. It’s creative and I’m doing something that I hope is helping people by educating them about good nutrition.

And I love doing it! Every morning I wake up with my mind full of ideas, and I can’t wait to get to work at my business… in the other room of my home. I don’t have to hurry out and get into stressful rush-hour traffic. I can choose my own hours. Since I’m at home, I can easily prepare the healthy foods I recommend in this website.
