Curious about Green Smoothies?
The term green smoothies seems almost commonplace today, but I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t used much before Victoria Boutenko introduced green smoothies to us a few years ago.In 2005 I read her book called Green for Life. It immediately resonated with me. For one thing, I had the delightful experience of enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner prepared by Victoria and her family a few years prior at a private home in San Diego County. It was a totally

vegan
meal, incredibly delicious and beautifully presented. Victoria is a charming and knowledgeable speaker. So, I came to her book (and DVD entitled “Greens Can Save Your Life”) with enthusiasm and trust.
Chimpanzees
In her ongoing search for ways to improve her own and her family’s health, she learned about chimpanzees’ eating habits. Since chimpanzees resemble humans more than any other animal, it seems reasonable that our nutrition needs would be similar. Humans and chimpanzees share 99.4% of DNA!Victoria learned that chimpanzees basically eat from two food groups: fruits and greens.
By greens, we mean the leafy greens like Romaine lettuce, kale, parsley, collards, lambs quarters, celery, spinach, red leaf lettuce, etc. Now, it’s hard for most humans to eat enough greens to get all the nutrition we need. When I imagine it, I think we would be chewing all day long just to break down the fibers. But we can get help from technology. A high-powered
blender
can be used to rupture the cell membranes and release the nutrients. A regular, department store blender will work if it’s new and the blades are sharp, but it will take longer.
The Study
Victoria didn’t stop her research there. She decided to conduct her own study… with humans. She refers to it as the Roseburg study.A group of people agreed for one month to drink one quart a day of green smoothies, prepared freshly and delivered each day by Victoria and her family. The results were impressive. The green smoothie drinkers reported the following improvements in their health: decreased cravings for unhealthy food, decreased blood pressure, lowered cholesterol, the disappearance of skin growths, increased energy, depression clearing, regular bowel movements, disappearance of insomnia, asthma attacks stopped, improved sex life, and weight loss. What is it about greens that could help bring about these remarkable results? Greens make the body more alkaline. D. Gary Young, ND, says that an acid condition in the body is the foundation for disease. One component of greens is chlorophyll. Some of the healing properties of chlorophyll are: • Increased blood count • Helps prevent cancer • Makes the body more alkaline • Counteracts ingested toxins • Helps with anemia • Helps to cleanse the liver • Improves milk production • Helps sores heal • Gets rid of bad breath • Soothes a sore throat • Relieves hemorrhoids • Improves varicose veins • Improves vision Did I mention that green smoothies are delicious? It may sound like an odd combination of ingredients, but give them a try. I think you’ll like them.
