Dec 2, 2008, Stevia - Is it Good or Bad?

Stevia is in the news. Yesterday I began preparing an article on it, and today on Good Morning America I heard a report that the FDA has tentatively allowed its use in the US.

In the meantime, before I could complete the article I received bad news about the health of a relative, so completion of the article will be postponed for a day or two.

I know that a lot of people swear by Stevia and that it's been used in other countries, like Paraguay (as I heard on the news), for years and years. But the Center for Science in the Public Interest has some concerns about its safety.

One thing that struck me is... I bet in Paraguay they use small amounts of the whole plant. In the US, it's refined and converted into something white and powdery that can be added to sweeten soft drinks. You know that Americans will be using large amounts of it (as a highly processed substance), as opposed to the people in South America who likely use it in its unrefined state.

Stay tuned... I'll be writing a more complete article on this in the next few days.

Nov 28, 2008, Thanksgiving Dinner Leftovers

I love Thanksgiving leftovers. I always prepare too much of everything and there's yummy food remaining for another meal or two. Yesterday's dinner was very simple yet delicious. Here's the menu:

  • Kabocha pumpkin stuffed with vegan bread dressing
  • Gravy made with garbanzo beans
  • Broccoli salad

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends... and delicious, healthy leftovers providing nourishment for another day or two.

If you have a vegetarian recipe to share, especially one that comes with a story, I'd be happy to post it for you on the site. Click here to be taken to a page where you can find another tasty recipe and upload your own.
