Healthy Fruit Isn't Just a Lunchbox Snack

Oh boy, this time of the year (late June) I am loving the healthy fruit that fills my neighborhood markets.

Fresh blueberries are one of my all-time favorites. I love the way really fresh blueberries have a little snap to their skin as you bite into their delectable inner juiciness. They are a perfect snack all by themselves, or a delicious part of a fruit salad (you get to choose the proportions based on availability and taste):

Anytime Fruit Salad

  • blueberries
  • mango
  • banana
  • orange
  • red grapes
  • raw walnuts (optional, but they add a tasty crunchiness)

Blueberries / 1 cup / 81.20 calories
Nutrient Amount DV (%)
vitamin C 18.86 mg 31.4
manganese 0.40 mg 20.0
dietary fiber 3.92 g 15.7
vitamin E 1.46 mg 7.3

This chart shows just a few of the nutrients in blueberries. (DV is a dietary term meaning daily value.) They’re also loaded with antioxidants , which are known to help prevent heart disease and cancer, reduce blood pressure and slow the effects of aging .

frozen red grapes Red grapes contain resveratrol and quercetin, potent antioxidants that boost heart health, protect against cancer and help reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases . I usually buy too many red grapes to eat while they’re fresh, so I freeze a bunch of them. What a great summertime snack, especially when you’re craving ice cream.

Mangos are so sweet and yummy… and loaded with nutrition. One mango supplies 25% of the daily requirement for vitamin A and 76% for vitamin C, plus lots of other vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

The banana is high in potassium and vitamin B6 and adds a sweet creaminess to the other textures in this nutritious fruit salad. Oranges are tart-sweet and so juicy, and they supply 120% of the daily requirement of vitamin C.

If you have blood sugar (diabetes, hypoglycemia) concerns and are worried about eating fruit, read this page for some clarification.

Do something good for your body and indulge in healthy fruit as a snack or a meal. It’s satisfying and delicious, and you’ll simply feel good—while you’re eating and afterwards.
