Natural Herbs Are a Gift to Humanity

I love natural herbs! I love to use them in preparing food, I love to drink them as tea, and I love using them for natural healing.

Used in food preparation, herbs offer a variety of tastes to enliven healthy recipes and enhance the eating experience. They offer such wonderful flavors that plain old salt and pepper use can be decreased or eliminated, especially important for those on a salt-restricted diet.

If you enjoy a cup of hot beverage but want to cut back on caffeine, consider herbal teas. There’s such a wide variety of herbs that you’re sure to find some you’ll enjoy.

Some natural herbs are useful both in healing and as culinary herbs. Let’s take a look at a few.

Oregano

Did you know oregano is a good source of vitamin K, iron, manganese, dietary fiber, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids ?

It also contains numerous phytonutrients, including thymol and rosmarinic acid, that function as potent antioxidants .

Constituents of oregano have been found to have powerful antibacterial properties for the prevention and treatment of severe bacterial infections, especially those that are difficult to treat and/or are antibiotic resistant.

And for eating, oregano is associated with Italian, Spanish and Mexican cooking.

Besides adding it to the tomato sauce for your next vegan and/or raw pizza, add it to salad dressings or sprinkle it into some sautéed mushrooms and onions. Delicious!

Ginger

Nutritionally, ginger is a good source of potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, and vitamin B6.

In addition to its well-known characteristic of alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal distress, scientific research has revealed that ginger is valuable therapeutically as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory agent.

Some people have found relief from arthritis by consuming as little as a 1/4-inch slice of fresh ginger cooked in food, although people who consumed more ginger reported quicker and better relief.

Studies have shown that it works better as an anti-motion sickness substance than a popular drug-store medicine.

And it’s also been shown to be safe and effective in reducing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Sautéed veggies taste scrumptious with some added fresh ginger. Do you ever make your own lemonade? Try adding some freshly grated ginger for a new taste sensation. You can also add it to tamari, olive oil and garlic for a delicious salad dressing with an Asian flair.

Rosemary

Rosemary is a good source of dietary fiber, iron and calcium.

Rosemary also contains substances that help in stimulating the immune system, in increasing circulation and improving digestion.

It contains anti-inflammatory compounds that may help reduce the severity of asthma attacks.

Rosemary and potatoes taste wonderful together. You can also add the herb to tomato sauce and soups.

Many restaurants offer olive oil as a dipping sauce for bread. You can create your own tasty version by mixing fresh or crushed dried rosemary in olive oil; lightly dip in your whole grain bread and enjoy.
