It’s Never too Late to
Enjoy Senior Health

Senior health is dependent upon healthy eating, which is a key to good health at any age. Along with regular physical exercise, it may lower your risk for various diseases and conditions associated with aging: obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic ailments.

Eating healthfully may also ward off digestive disorders , diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic ailments.

Eating healthfully may also ward off depression and help to keep your mind sharp.

Here are a few suggestions to get you on track with a healthy eating plan:

  • When you go shopping, select high-fiber foods like beans, vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, and fruits . They help with regularity and also lower your risk for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

  • Aim for low-fat meals . Our bodies need fewer calories as we age, especially if we aren’t very active.

  • Choose soy milk or nut milk over dairy products .

  • Keep some nutrition-dense foods on hand, such as dried fruit (don’t eat too many—they are high in sugar ) and nut butters to spread on whole grain crackers, and fruit. It’s good to have something healthy at hand for those snack attacks!

  • Drink plenty of water and/or water-based fluids such as herbal teas.

  • If you are unable to prepare meals for yourself, find out about programs in your area that serve or deliver meals. Call Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 or check online at http://www.eldercare.gov.
