Sugar is a Dangerous Addiction
People in the United States are addicted to sugar. That is one of the reasons we are so sick in this country.Even
baby formula
is loaded with it! Dentists have told their patients to drink soda with a straw; otherwise, the enamel on the teeth will be destroyed. I’m wondering, if the soda is so bad for your teeth, what is it doing to the rest of your body? I heard a presentation by Hugo Rodier, M.D., a board-certified family practitioner and Medical Director at the Pioneer Clinic, a leading integrative health center in Draper, Utah, say that people should just get a very large straw so it comes out the other end. That's a graphic image that will stay with you! Did you know that a 12-ounce can of soda pop contains 9 teaspoons of the sweet substance?
Sodas contain
high-fructose corn syrup
and other refined sweeteners. It’s so cheap for farmers to grow corn, because of government subsidies, that high-fructose corn syrup is in everything these days. And it’s a cheap ingredient for the food manufacturers to use, so they can boost profits (at the expense of consumers' health). The medical profession and consumers may think that fructose is a healthier substance, but studies have shown that this fructose can cause anemia, high cholesterol, heart hypertrophy, and liver disease, especially in combination with copper deficiency, which is rampant in the United States today.
Cell Membrane DysfunctionalityAll diseases have basically the same simple mechanism: Proteins on the cell membranes don’t work well unless they have the right sugars. Refined sweeteners lead to insulin resistance—dysfunction of the receptors for insulin. The cell membrane should open up so sugars can come into the cell. As a society, we’re trying to stick the wrong substances to these proteins. This leads to the body creating more insulin and extra sugar floating around in the bloodstream, going everywhere, because it can’t get into the cells. This leads to diabetes and other degenerative diseases. The cells aren’t getting the nutrition they need. Are You Insulin Resistant?
Dr. Rodier said he can tell if a person is insulin resistant just by looking at him or her. If a man is more than 40” around the midriff, he is insulin resistant. If a woman if more than 35”, she is insulin resistant. Can Diabetics Eat Fruit?People often say they can’t eat
fruit
because they have diabetes, all the while they’re stuffing cookies and muffins and white bread in their mouths. It turns out that the sugar in fruit is perfect for cell membranes. Fruits are rich sources of vitamins, minerals,
phytochemicals
and fiber. Studies show that diabetics who do not eat fruit (and root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots or beets) have a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes. Recent studies at Oxford University in England and Arizona State University suggest that diabetics should eat fruits and root vegetables with other foods to slow the hyperglycemia that can cause cell damage (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, January 2006; Journal of the American Dietetic Association, December, 2005). What about Fruit Juice?
Whole foods are always best. If the “fruit juice” is a regular grocery-store brand, it’s probably laden with high-fructose corn syrup and/or other refined sweeteners and chemicals. Read labels!
